SUMMARY

SusList — build your sustainable shopping list

Suslist was a project as part of my Google UX Design Certificate. The brief was to design a user experience for social good. In my case the social good was encouraging sustainable purchasing behavior and making it accessible through SusList. SusList is a sustainability app and website that offers tips and tools for users to build a sustainable shopping list.

PROBLEM

The Challenge

Young adults and families strive for a more sustainable lifestyle and shopping behavior but are frustrated of researching product information and loosing time. The challenge was to design a responsive user experience that solves the users pain points and allows users to quickly build a sustainable shopping list.

DISCOVER + DEFINE

Understanding the Users

I conducted user interviews and created empathy maps and personas to better understand the target users, their needs and pain points.

Based on the user interviews and ideation, I identified three main insights the user experience should comprise.

Insights

  1. Barcode Scanner & Search Function

  2. Sustainability Tips

  3. Responsive Website & App

INSIGHT 1 & INSIGHT 2

Sketching Wireframes

I sketched out wireframes for each screen of my app, keeping the insights Barcode Scanner, Search Functions and Sustainability Tips in mind.

Refining Designs

During the design process I conducted a moderated usability study, to figure out if the main user experience, build a sustainable shopping list quickly, is easy for users to do. Based on the findings in the usability studies I refined the design.

Streamlining functions to emphasize purpose

I designed the app leaner by removing the label page and emphasizing the homepage as a unique starting point. This strengthened users’ perception of SusList’s purpose to enable sustainable purchasing decisions and to build a sustainable shopping list.

Empathizing alternative products

To make alternative products more obvious for users, I added a link to see a hint of choosing alternatives above the fold.

Replacing shopping list icon

Furthermore, I changed the shopping list icon to enable users to recognize the list icon immediately.

INSIGHT 3

Responsive Design for variable devices

During the research phase I found out that users will use SusList’s services from a variety of devices. So, I felt it was important to extend the app with a responsive website. I optimized the website’s browsing experience for different device sizes, such as mobile, tablet and desktop so users have the smoothest experience possible.

RESULTS

Outcome

As deliverables I designed 4 high-fidelity prototypes: 1 prototype of the mobile app and 3 prototypes of the responsive website including mobile, tablet and desktop devices.
